Some of Hillside's rescued horses have often enjoyed grazing in a meadow neighbouring the estate where Anna Sewell, author of Black Beauty, often stayed with her uncle and close to where she is buried. Anna Sewell, back in the mid Victorian period was, in her own way, a campaigner for animal welfare and was very much a ‘local girl’. We hope that, if Anna had still been alive today, she would be pleased to know that Hillside Animal Sanctuary is located so close to her.
