Due to the recent cold and wet conditions, we are now at least a month behind turning our rescued animals on to their summer pastures. Although some are now out enjoying the grass, most are munching their way through lots of hay in their winter quarters, waiting their turn to go out. It is very worrying that hay, their main feed, is now in URGENT short supply, mainly due to last year’s dry summer.
During the winter, around 12 lorryloads, each carrying 24 tonnes of hay, are delivered to us every week and this amount gradually reduces as the horses, cows and sheep go out to grass which this Spring has been severely hampered by the inclement weather.
We have already received some recent hay deliveries from Gloucestershire and Yorkshire and now we have to look even further afield to Scotland, at greater cost, for our next urgently needed supplies to feed the animals until this year’s hay harvest is ready. The first lorryload from over the border is arriving soon.
